When my friend told me that her and her crew were going to Tulum my birthday week, I instantly wanted in. I checked flights and snatched a cheap round trip using points and cash, and BOOM! Ya girl was headed to Tulum to celebrate her 34th birthday with the girls October 26th through the 30th!
Flight day came and Hurricane Zeta had other plans for me at first. My United flight on Monday got cancelled the night before forcing me to rebook to leave on Wednesday. Uh no ma’am. That won’t work. I cancelled my flight with United and rebooked with Southwest, my tried and true! Southwest had a flight for Tuesday morning and I only paid $34 for it. It was truly nobody but God. So Tuesday, I went to Tulum to meet up with the girls and get this party started.
Tuesday, we were able to get some rooftop pool time before we headed out for dinner. The AirBNB we stayed at was amazing! Rooftop Penthouse with 3 Bedrooms, a private pool and views! It was only right we have a photoshoot : )
We did dinner at Bak Restaurante (Bak by Harry’s) and it was dinner at a club! Sparklers everywhere for the many celebrations and tables with music blasting! It was a whole vibe! Everyone ordered steak and I had the lobster risotto. They surprised me with a birthday dessert! check out my Instagram post!
We retired for the evening after dinner as the last little bit of rain from Hurricane Zeta was approaching Tulum. The rain and storm there felt like I was in the middle of the Calm app. It was so soothing and relaxing to hear!
On Wednesday, we woke up to rain, but proceeded to enjoy the day no matter what! We had breakfast at our penthouse, and prepared for a beach day. After a mini photoshoot by the main pool of our living quarters, we left for the strip!
The Tulum strip by the beach is where all the beach clubs and restaurants and shops are. It is a small street with A LOT of bumps and potholes. Be prepared to feel them all when riding through there. We parked and walked the beach till we found cabanas that were suitable. We ended up at Akiin Beach Club. We ordered drinks and food and chilled all day! There was a minimum consumption requirement of $3,000 Pesos (roughly ~$150 USD). Between 6 women, that was easily doable.
After the beach, we went back to the Penthouse and got showered and changed for dinner reservations at Kitchen Table. I had the short ribs and they were ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! Highly recommend! They came with cauliflower mash potatoes and carrot. I left nothing on my plate.
We went up and down the strip after dinner to see what else we could get into, but with large crowds and no masks at several places we ended up not chancing it and just going back to the penthouse. The restaurants were packed and looked like a good time, but we were just not willing to take the risk.
Thursday, we did another beach day after having brunch at Casa Maria Mexican Grill. Brunch by the beach was beautiful. Sun was beaming, so suncreen was needed for sure. Do not play with that Mexico sun…you will burn. Before going to the beach to hang, we went to Gran Cenote. Cenotes are surface connections to subterranean water bodies. Most require you to remove all creams and gels from your body before getting in the water so that you cannot poison the fish and sea plants. We were required to shower from head to toe before being able to get in. The water was cold at first, but you get used to it.
We found a spot on the beach with no minimum consumption and kicked it all day. We hung out right behind a DJ and had drinks, guacamole, grilled octopus, and potatoes. There are so many spots to hang along the beach. Just walk along the beach and stop when you see what you like.
We had a chef (@molcajeteproject) come and cook dinner for us on Thursday night. They prepared guacamole, refried beans, red snapper fish, grilled vegetables, and a dessert. Very delicious and the chefs were great people. Had a playlist that set the vibes just right, and we took pictures to commemorate the evening! They were very impressed with our Español and us embracing the culture.
My departure day was Friday, so I only had the morning to enjoy. We went for a walk to Hotel Bardo and had breakfast at their restaurant, Milum. I enjoyed all the food I had while in Tulum.
If you are traveling to Tulum, make sure to keep sunscreen and bug repellant on you. You will need them both! The sun plays no games down there so as Scar from the Lion King said Be Prepared! Tulum has so many breathtaking views and sites, I would definitely need another trip to explore more. Maybe a baecation there…
Till next time!
