Some call it a mid life crisis, I called it a mom life crisis lol. I had my son, and now I was in this phase of trying to process and figure out who this new version of Kelz was. With all the feeding, pumping, and sleeping when I could, I felt I needed a refresh…a recharge…something to liven me up! I had not played around with color in a while, and when I did it would usually be a safe color. The last time I did a major lift was when I had a perm. I ended up deciding to go natural after that color ate my hair alive smh. (Moisture ladies! Color and chemicals need moisture!!) It was only right that this time…natural KELZ GO BIG OR GO HOME!
For color, I already knew my girl Reva would be my go to! She is an AMAZING color stylist (and other services) here in the Houston Galleria area. I highly recommend her if you are looking to do it right! Check out her new site! I had previously sent her pics for inspiration of where I wanted to go so she already had a game plan when I arrived.
Honey Blonde and Brown highlights with a complimenting brown all over. It was bomb! I had family pictures that same week, so I planned to debut the new look with those you know New hair who dis!? lol
Pregnancy had my hair all thick and full of body. I may have got a few inches, but it wasn’t as noticeable to me as the thickness. I was a little skeptical about coloring with the post partum shedding happening as well. I plan to hit on that in a Mommy Moment blog post. My edges had thinned out quite a bit (You could tell depending on how I angled my part.) They have thickened back up since then, but going through it in real time….chile it was struggle bus city round here.
Now! With color comes care and attention for your curlz! I am big on moisture and making sure my curls are deeply conditioned and juicy! Here are the products I use when maintaining my color and curl pattern:
Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Shampoo
I love the smell and how nourishing it feels to my hair. I used this back when I had a perm, but I had stopped going natural. With color, I thought it wouldn’t hurt to pick it back up for the simple fact it is for dry, brittle hair. Color can lead to that so let’s combat it before hand lol.
Palmer’s Coconut Oil Formula Conditioning Shampoo
I follow up with this shampoo for the second rinse. Another moisture packed shampoo that has my hair feeling soft rather than stripped. Perfect ending to cleansing.
Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Deep Moist Treatment
I use this as a conditioner. It only takes 3 minutes to do its job, but
between fixing bottles or changing Mason, I may occasionally leave it on for 10-15 minutes : )
SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Treatment Masque Packet
I deep condition EVERY time I wash. It is crucial for me, and I can tell a difference in my hair if I do not deep condition. I use two of these packets at a time, divide my hair in half and use one on each. I am heavy handed with my conditioners. I work this in and detangle with that and put it under a shower cap *Cough or a plastic bag from grocery store* and go about my evening or day. I can leave this on for an hour or even over night sometimes.
Creme of Nature with argan oil – Strength & Shine Leave-In Conditioner
My Leave in of choice hands down! Love the smell and I love the softness of my hair with it. I apply on each section of hair as I style followed by my oil of choice.
Tropic Isle Living Jamaican Black Castor Oil
With post partum shedding, this has been my oil of choice! It restores thickness and its rather thick consistency makes it longer lasting on my hair. If you have some thinning areas, massage this in morning and night. You should start to see results.
